Using PDF Margin Calculator with the right inputs
Calculate printable page area after selected margins. Start by matching your task to the quantities and options shown below. The definitions of the inputs matter as much as the final number or transformed output; retain the original values so that you can repeat or check the result.
Inputs and options explained
- Page width (mm): Use the measurement and unit named in the field. Do not substitute a diameter for a radius or mix unit scales. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
- Page height (mm): Use the measurement and unit named in the field. Do not substitute a diameter for a radius or mix unit scales. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
- Left/right margin (mm): Enter the numeric value for this quantity using the units or scale shown in the label. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
- Top/bottom margin (mm): Enter the numeric value for this quantity using the units or scale shown in the label. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
Method and interpretation
Printable width = page width − 2 × left/right margin. Printable height = page height − 2 × top/bottom margin. Width and height are in millimetres; their product is divided by 100 to express the area in square centimetres.
Worked example
An A4 page of 210 × 297 mm with 10 mm margins on every side leaves a 190 × 277 mm rectangle, or 526.3 cm².
Assumptions and limitations
Opposite margins are assumed equal. The calculation cannot detect your printer's minimum margins, bleed settings or non-printable regions. It plans a rectangle and does not edit a PDF.
Why are my margins rejected?
Twice the horizontal margin must be smaller than the page width, and twice the vertical margin must be smaller than the page height. Otherwise no positive printable rectangle remains.
Before you use the output
- Choose the intended action: Calculate. Re-run the operation after changing an input or mode so that you are checking the updated result.
- Read the result label and any accompanying explanation. Keep the input values or source file with the output so that a later comparison uses the same assumptions.
- If a result looks unexpected, check units, separators and selected options first. Try a smaller example you can verify rather than repeatedly changing several settings at once.
Questions or a result that needs checking?
If you find a discrepancy, report a problem with PDF Margin Calculator. Include a non-sensitive example, the selected options, the result you expected and the result shown. This makes the issue easier to reproduce. See About & privacy for how the site handles tool inputs.
