About Paper Weight Calculator

Use Paper Weight Calculator locally for PDF layout and print planning. It does not upload or modify PDF files.

Does this tool send my data anywhere?

No. Its calculation or transformation happens on your device.

Using Paper Weight Calculator with the right inputs

Estimate total paper weight from dimensions, gsm and page count. Start by matching your task to the quantities and options shown below. The definitions of the inputs matter as much as the final number or transformed output; retain the original values so that you can repeat or check the result.

Inputs and options explained

  • Page width (mm): Use the measurement and unit named in the field. Do not substitute a diameter for a radius or mix unit scales. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
  • Page height (mm): Use the measurement and unit named in the field. Do not substitute a diameter for a radius or mix unit scales. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
  • Paper weight (gsm): Enter the numeric value for this quantity using the units or scale shown in the label. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
  • Pages: Enter the numeric value for this quantity using the units or scale shown in the label. The form indicates a minimum of 0.

Method and interpretation

Paper mass in grams = width in metres × height in metres × paper grammage in grams per square metre × sheet count. Millimetre dimensions are divided by 1,000 before multiplying.

Worked example

For 100 A4 sheets measuring 210 × 297 mm at 80 gsm, the estimate is 0.210 × 0.297 × 80 × 100 = 498.96 grams.

Assumptions and limitations

The Pages input acts as a count of physical sheets in this formula. For duplex documents, use the sheet count rather than the number of printed sides. Covers, ink, envelopes, binding and packaging are excluded; weigh the finished package for postage.

Is gsm the same as paper thickness?

No. Gsm describes mass per unit area. Paper with the same gsm can have different thickness, coating and stiffness.

Before you use the output

  • Choose the intended action: Calculate. Re-run the operation after changing an input or mode so that you are checking the updated result.
  • Read the result label and any accompanying explanation. Keep the input values or source file with the output so that a later comparison uses the same assumptions.
  • If a result looks unexpected, check units, separators and selected options first. Try a smaller example you can verify rather than repeatedly changing several settings at once.

Questions or a result that needs checking?

If you find a discrepancy, report a problem with Paper Weight Calculator. Include a non-sensitive example, the selected options, the result you expected and the result shown. This makes the issue easier to reproduce. See About & privacy for how the site handles tool inputs.
