Using Temperature Converter with the right inputs
Convert Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin precisely. Start by matching your task to the quantities and options shown below. The definitions of the inputs matter as much as the final number or transformed output; retain the original values so that you can repeat or check the result.
Inputs and options explained
- Temperature: Enter the numeric value for this quantity using the units or scale shown in the label.
- Input unit: choose Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin.
Method and interpretation
Temperature scales use offsets as well as scale factors: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, and K = °C + 273.15. These relationships describe temperature readings, not simply a ratio between units.
Worked example
A reading of 20 °C is 68 °F and 293.15 K. A change of 20 Celsius degrees, however, is a change of 36 Fahrenheit degrees; the 32-degree offset is not added to a temperature difference.
Assumptions and limitations
Choose the unit of the original reading before interpreting the equivalents. A temperature interval and an absolute temperature are different quantities. Do not use a physically impossible temperature as a meaningful engineering or scientific input.
Can I use the same calculation for a temperature difference?
Use only the scale factor for an interval. Celsius and kelvin intervals have the same magnitude, while a Celsius interval is multiplied by 9/5 for Fahrenheit.
Before you use the output
- Choose the intended action: Convert. Re-run the operation after changing an input or mode so that you are checking the updated result.
- Read the result label and any accompanying explanation. Keep the input values or source file with the output so that a later comparison uses the same assumptions.
- If a result looks unexpected, check units, separators and selected options first. Try a smaller example you can verify rather than repeatedly changing several settings at once.
Questions or a result that needs checking?
If you find a discrepancy, report a problem with Temperature Converter. Include a non-sensitive example, the selected options, the result you expected and the result shown. This makes the issue easier to reproduce. See About & privacy for how the site handles tool inputs.
