Your result

◎

A little input. A useful answer.

Enter your values and run the tool to see your result here.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or US units.
  2. Enter distance, fuel consumption, fuel price and the number of people sharing the cost.
  3. Optionally include the return journey, then calculate.

The method

Metric fuel = distance × litres per 100 km ÷ 100. US fuel = miles ÷ miles per US gallon. Cost = fuel × price.

For example

400 km at 7 L/100 km needs 28 litres. At 1.60 per litre, the cost is 44.80.

Enter a current price yourself. Driving conditions affect real fuel use; this estimate excludes parking, tolls and maintenance.

Using Fuel Cost Calculator with the right inputs

Estimate trip fuel use and cost using distance, efficiency and fuel price. Start by matching your task to the quantities and options shown below. The definitions of the inputs matter as much as the final number or transformed output; retain the original values so that you can repeat or check the result.

Inputs and options explained

  • Unit system: choose km · litres per 100 km · price/litre, miles · US mpg · price/US gallon.
  • Distance: Use the measurement and unit named in the field. Do not substitute a diameter for a radius or mix unit scales. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
  • Fuel consumption / economy: Enter the numeric value for this quantity using the units or scale shown in the label. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
  • Price per litre / gallon: Use the amount for the period indicated and keep the currency consistent with other money inputs. The form indicates a minimum of 0.
  • People sharing the cost: Use the amount for the period indicated and keep the currency consistent with other money inputs. The form indicates a minimum of 1.
  • Include return trip: enable this option only when you want that condition to apply; compare it with the option disabled if you are checking its effect.

Example to try in this tool

Use the following sample values to see how the controls and result fit together. They are an illustration of the operation, not recommended values for your own situation.

  • Unit system: km · litres per 100 km · price/litre
  • Distance: 400
  • Fuel consumption / economy: 7
  • Price per litre / gallon: 1.6
  • People sharing the cost: 1
  • Include return trip: Not selected

Select Calculate fuel cost. The result begins with:

Estimated fuel cost

44.8

Uses the fuel price you entered; excludes tolls and other expenses.

Fuel needed

28 litres

This example records the tool’s output for those inputs. Check the method and assumptions against your own task before using a result; reproducing an example is not independent certification of the underlying model.

Interpretation and limitations

Treat entered speeds, prices and durations as assumptions for a particular trip. Real conditions can change with traffic, weather, route choice and breaks. Confirm the units and whether a distance or cost refers to one leg, a return journey or the whole group.

Can this estimate replace a current itinerary or quote?

No. Compare it with current route information, provider prices and your actual schedule. Allow time or budget for items that are outside the inputs shown on this page.

Before you use the output

  • Choose the intended action: Calculate fuel cost. Re-run the operation after changing an input or mode so that you are checking the updated result.
  • Read the result label and any accompanying explanation. Keep the input values or source file with the output so that a later comparison uses the same assumptions.
  • If a result looks unexpected, check units, separators and selected options first. Try a smaller example you can verify rather than repeatedly changing several settings at once.

Questions or a result that needs checking?

If you find a discrepancy, report a problem with Fuel Cost Calculator. Include a non-sensitive example, the selected options, the result you expected and the result shown. This makes the issue easier to reproduce. See About & privacy for how the site handles tool inputs.
